Education in Kambia

Kambia has five primary schools and two secondary schools. Primary education begins at six and finishes at 12 years old. Children must pass an exam in order to obtain a place at secondary school. Since there are not always sufficient places at secondary level many children only receive a very basic education. Like the rest of the town, education in Kambia suffered as a result of the civil war. Books, records and buildings have either been damaged or destroyed and teachers are working with huge classes with a minimum of resources. A visit to a primary school revealed classes of 65 and upwards. Peace has brought stability to the country and the desire to rebuild for a better future. Currently a lack of resources is preventing children from receiving an education that will equip them to make a valuable contribution to their country in the future. Kambia schools need our support. The people of Kambia are keen to establish links with schools in the UK.
