Traditional Birth Attendants in Kambia

Who Are We?

The Kambia Appeal, formerly The Kambia Hospital Appeal, is a UK-registered charity, based in Cheltenham, that has supported the medical district of Kambia in Sierra Leone since 1992. Over the years, we have helped to supply medicines, equipment and training for medical personnel.

As a charity, we rely on donations and fundraising from individuals and groups across the country, as well as grants from Trusts and Foundations in the UK and abroad.

Our Current Objectives

We aim to improve access to quality healthcare in Kambia, with a special focus on the health of women and children in the district. By improving reproductive health, our work is designed to lower the number of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth in Kambia.

The Kambia Appeal's Cheltenham Scholarships
To combat the chronic shortage of qualified health workers in Kambia, the Kambia Appeal is funding a number of local Kambian students to train for medical qualifications within Sierra Leone. (click here to find out more)

Motorbike Ambulances For Kambia

kambiavisit_dec2007_1.jpg (167996 bytes)

We are currently setting up a motorbike ambulance project to provide low-cost transportation for pregnant women to access health care at their local clinics.

To promote the use of the ambulances an education film was made in Kambia in December 2007 by volunteers from the UK to be screened in villages across the district.

Message from Sister Fullah, Kambia District: The response to the film is one of joy and resentment to the outcome of the other pregnant woman. They were also happy to know that the cast are from Kambia district. The film has been taken to health centres and it has been played at the maternity home in Kambia and Yaliboya and Rokai Islands.
In March 2007, 'Belleh Woman: Go de Right Side!' was evaluated by Dr Ellie Gooding of the University of Sierra Leone, and her Diploma of Public Health Students, thanks to the support of Dr Alison Weightman of the Cardiff University Duthie Library. They were very impressed, and another public health physician in Sierra Leone thought it was excellent. They have requested further copies of the DVD.
