A New Link for the Charity
On Saturday 29th April 2006, Dr Sean Elyan (trustee) and his
wife Anne (fund raising committee member) agreed to go and talk
at the Annual Independence Day Celebrations of SLEBA (Sierra
Leone Bristol Association). We found ourselves participating in
a little bit of African life in Bristol. Billed to start at
8.00pm with our talk at 8.15pm, perhaps we shouldn't have been
surprised when people only started really arriving at 9.45pm!
A brief presentation later, telling the audience all about
the Kambia Hospital Appeal midnight came and went as Anne handed
out the annual awards. SLEBA made donations to support an after
school club in their local community and a community in Sierra
Leone also. The awards were followed by a delicious supper
prepared by the ladies of the committee in true African
tradition.
Most importantly, we met a number of people with useful
skills who expressed interest in working out in Kambia. We know
that contacts are always valuable. Many people had good insight
into Sierra Leone and what life is like there. The group
represented 40-50 Sierra Leonean Families who live in and around
Bristol.
There seem to be good links with London as evidenced by the
London versus Bristol Dancing Competition. As the hall shook to
the African Beat we made our reluctant apologies and left at
12.45am with the all night party just beginning. We would like
to thank the chairman, secretary and community for asking us
along. It inspired us to keep up our efforts for the Kambian
people.
